The Aircraft Maintenance Engineering (AME) course is a three-year program, approved by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). This licensed course is carefully structured to combine theoretical learning with practical training to equip students for a successful career in aviation maintenance. Over three years, students gain in-depth knowledge about aircraft systems, maintenance practices, safety protocols, and aviation regulations, preparing them for the demands of the aviation industry.
How to Become an Aircraft Maintenance Engineer (AME)
Becoming an Aircraft Maintenance Engineer (AME) is a well-defined journey that involves several key steps:
- Complete Higher Secondary Education or Equivalent: Obtain a higher secondary certificate with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as core subjects or complete a three-year engineering diploma in disciplines like Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics, or Aeronautical Engineering.
- Enroll in a DGCA-Approved CAR 147 Training Organization: Join a DGCA-approved CAR 147 Basic Training Organization, such as the Sha-Shib Group of Institutions, which operates ten AME institutes across India. These institutes offer specialized training in Aircraft Maintenance Engineering Modules, ensuring that students receive the knowledge and skills needed for the profession.
- Pass AME Modules: Successfully clear all Aircraft Maintenance Engineering Modules outlined in CAR 66. These modules are crucial to understanding the various aspects of aircraft maintenance, including the mechanical and avionics systems.
- Gain Practical Experience: Acquire hands-on training at DGCA-approved CAR 145 MRO organizations. Sha-Shib Group provides access to 13 MRO bases and sub-bases in India, offering practical exposure to real-world maintenance environments and aircraft systems.
- Undergo Specialized Training: Complete additional examinations, on-the-job training, and viva assessments focused on the specific aircraft category chosen by the student. This ensures that they are well-versed in the specialized area of aircraft maintenance.
- Fulfill Licensing Requirements: After completing all Aircraft Maintenance Engineering Modules, gaining practical experience, and passing necessary assessments, candidates can apply for an AME license issued by the DGCA, marking the successful completion of their training and eligibility to work in the aviation industry.
