How to get AME license

Here are the various stages an aspiring student would typically go through to become a licensed Aircraft Maintenance Engineer in India with Sha-Shib Group of Institutions:

  • Educational Requirements: Obtain higher secondary education with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics or a three-year diploma in mechanical, electrical, electronic, or aeronautical engineering.
  • Admission to DGCA-Approved Training: Get admitted to a Sha-Shib Group CAR 147 (Basic) Training Organisation, approved by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). Sha-Shib Group has ten DGCA-approved AME institutes across India.
  • Complete DGCA Module Examinations: During their time at Sha-Shib Group’s CAR 147 (Basic) Training Organisation, students must pass all DGCA module papers outlined in CAR 66, the regulatory framework for AME training.
  • Gain Practical Experience: Students at Sha-Shib Group have the unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in aircraft maintenance at the group’s own DGCA-approved CAR 145 Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) organisations. Sha-Shib owns 13 MRO bases and sub-bases in India, with additional practical tie-ups with other aviation organisations.
  • On-the-Job Training & Examinations: As students accumulate maintenance experience, they undergo further exams, on-the-job training, and vivas based on the aircraft category they intend to work on.
  • Eligibility for DGCA AME License Exam: Once students have completed all required module examinations, gained sufficient practical experience, and passed necessary examinations and vivas, they are eligible to apply for the DGCA Aircraft Maintenance Engineer License Exam.
  • Issuance of License: After successfully passing the AME License Examination, students are awarded their DGCA AME License, qualifying them to work as licensed aircraft maintenance engineers.

Sha-Shib Group ensures students are fully prepared for the AME License Examination, providing them with the skills and experience necessary to excel in the aviation industry.

The DGCA AME license validity ensures engineers maintain their qualifications to perform maintenance duties. A DGCA AME license remains valid for the period specified on the license, with a maximum validity of ten years. It can be renewed for an additional ten years at a time upon applying for renewal. This system ensures that engineers consistently meet regulatory standards and stay updated with industry practices. License holders must ensure timely renewal to retain their certification and continue their professional journey in the aviation industry without interruption.

DGCA AME License Categories

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) categorizes Aircraft Maintenance Engineering (AME) licenses into distinct streams based on specialization. Various AME license categories include:

Focuses on maintaining and troubleshooting jet engine-equipped aircraft. This category is ideal for aspirants aiming to work with international airlines and aviation organizations in mechanical roles.

Deals with the maintenance of piston engines and light aeroplane structures, offering expertise in smaller aircraft systems.

Engineers certified under this category handle maintenance and repairs for helicopters, a highly sought-after skill in the aviation sector.

Covers the maintenance of aircraft avionics systems, including electrical, instrument, and radio navigation systems, ensuring operational precision and safety.

These categories equip engineers with specialized skills for diverse aviation industry roles.
